Children with ADHD can get bored very easily, and boredom is often a gateway to trouble as he or she tries to create some stimulation â€" or mischief. Keep in mind, however, that all children need downtime, too, so plan those times each day as well. When you are creating the summer schedule tailor it to your childs interests and needs. Try to plan activities in which your child gets sometimes for interacting with peers. Make sure all your kids get outside (with sunscreen) to play and engage in lots of physical activity. If your child can swim, the pool is a great outlet for exercise in the summer. Make sure your child is involved in the planning of activities. Get out a big calendar and have fun filling in the schedule together. Write the summer schedule out on the calendar and post it in an easily visible spot in your home so both of you can see what each day will bring. 2. Plan Academic Activities to Avoid the Summer Slide When developing your childs summer schedule, be sure to include times for academic learning opportunities and practice. It is so easy to go through the summer and forget about school, but children will lose academic growth â€" particularly in math and reading skills â€" over the summer (known as the summer slide) if they do not engage in educational activities. What makes this doubly important for kids with ADHD is that many of them also have accompanying learning disabilities. They can quickly lose academic gains without practice and repetition. So, schedule regular academic activities at home with reading and math to help your child maintain his or her educational level and to provide continuity and enrichment over the summer. Talk with your childs teacher and ask for suggestions and recommendations tailored to your childs educational needs. Because the rest of the year can be so busy with school, homework, sports or other after-school activities, many families find that summer is a good time to schedule formal academic tutoring lessons to help with specific learning issues. Be sure to make the educational time fun! Build in reward systems to help keep your child motivated. Schedule this time during the morning or whenever your child is freshest and most focused. Use this time to help bolster your childs academic skills and self-confidence. 3. Summer Camp Options You may find that having your child involved in a summer camp program helps structure his or her day and provides additional opportunities for fun, socializing, learning and success. When thinking about summer camps, keep in mind your childs needs. There are quite a few summer camps and treatment programs designed specifically for children with ADHD. If your child experiences marked problems in social interactions with peers, or if he or she is very impulsive and needs a good behavior management system, one of these specialty camps may be a good fit. 4. Choosing a Medication Break If your child is on medication to help manage symptoms of ADHD, there is often a question about whether or not to give the child a break over the summer months. The answer should be unique to the child. ADHD is a pervasive disorder that does not go away over the summer. Most children continue to experience challenging impairments in attention and mental focus, self-control, working memory, organization, time management, problem-solving and regulation of emotions  â€" whether or not the school is in session. Symptoms of ADHD, however, can affect each child in very individual ways. For some kids, the symptoms may be on the milder side or the child may struggle primarily with inattention in the educational setting. On the other hand, ADHD does tend to affect all aspects of a childs life â€" getting along with others; following through with tasks; being able to stop and think through situations before reacting; the ability to maintain self-control and inhibit behaviors; to read social situations; follow through with directions; delay gratification, and just get through the day in a productive and positive way. If you are traveling over the summer on family vacations or if your child is attending camp or is involved in activities that require him or her to maintain focus, control his or her body, manage transitions, frustrations and emotions, and relate positively with peers â€" and your child is on medication that helps him or her to do this â€" then a medication break may not be in his or her best interest over the summer. If these areas are challenging for your child during the school year, they will continue to create the same challenges over the summer. Work together with your childs doctor to sort out the best approach to summer medication decisions. If there are side effects that you are worried about, and you have been hesitant to make those changes during the school year, communicate and plan with the doctor. The result is that professionals refer to this giant lizard as Varanus priscus, leaving it to the public to wield the nickname Megalania. Paleontologists speculate that Megalania was the apex predator of Pleistocene Australia, feasting at leisure on mammalian megafauna like Diprotodon (better known as the Giant Wombat) and Procoptodon (the Giant Short-Faced Kangaroo). The Giant Monitor Lizard would have been relatively immune from predation itself unless it happened to spar with two other predators that shared its late Pleistocene territory: Thylacoleo, the Marsupial Lion, or the Quinkana, a 10-foot-long, 500-pound crocodile. (Given its splay-legged posture, it seems unlikely that Megalania could have outrun more fleet-footed mammalian predators, especially if these furry assassins decided to gang up for the hunt.) One interesting fact about Megalania is that its the largest identified lizard ever to have lived on our planet. If that makes you do a double-take, remember that Megalania technically belongs to the order Squamata, placing it on an entirely different branch of evolution than plus-sized prehistoric reptiles like dinosaurs, archosaurs, and therapsids. Today, Squamata is represented by close to 10,000 species of lizards and snakes, including Megalanias modern descendants, the monitor lizards. Megalania is one of the few giant Pleistocene animals the demise of which cant be traced directly to early humans; the Giant Monitor Lizard was probably doomed to extinction by the disappearance of the gentle, herbivorous, oversized mammals that early Australians preferred to hunt instead. Nevertheless, I have also had several praises from my other friends for being unique, hardworking and intelligent. Because I do not normally clear my table before I start working because I treat it as a waste of time, I normally do things and achieve my targets very fast. I have been criticized by a friend whom I think is extremely organized. Organized people tend to be more efficient and always act and think more logically compared to the messy people. This really wastes a lot of time. It may be right that getting organized is a waste of time and therefore an individual who is naturally messy should not waste time in trying to get organized. Many people may have ignored Anti-Semitism because, they agreed with the Nazis on other issues, however some people were actively Anti-Semitic themselves. This tells us that the Nazis had built up a state so powerful and secretive that it was possible to get away with genocide. The wartime emergency made it possible to keep the extermination of the Jews secret, from the majority of the population. A map of Poland and Germany (Source U) shows that all the extermination camps were situated in Poland, away from the German population. Therefore, the Germans may not have known, as they would not be able to see the camps. Also the SS were forced to keep the genocide a secret, in a speech by Himmler he said, '...we will never speak about it in public.' and also 'à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦he would do it again if it were an order and if it were necessary.' The German people were also subjected to Nazi propaganda and control. They would also be worried about food, water and being bombed on, as it was wartime. They were probably worried about themselves. Critical Response In Mary Sherrys essay In Praise of the F Word she describes how she feels that students are being cheated by schools, not learning material and being passed on. She calls the diplomas that some kids get meaningless and also goes as far to say that these graduates are semiliterate. Sherrys solution to the problem as she sees it is to use flunking students as a general policy, or at least threatening to flunk them to motivate them.She feels that the students who make it to educational- repair shops or adult-literacy programs are fortunate. It is here in these educational repair shops hat Sherry states these students discover that they have been cheated by the educational system. I do not think that Sherry is fair in making these statements. She did not present enough evidence to me to get me to buy into her arguments. There are several concerns with this essay that make her views unacceptable. My first problem with this Essay is that Sherry teaches an adult-literacy p rogram.From that viewpoint she does have some firsthand knowledge about the population of people in need of basic grammar and writing skills, but it also makes her bias. She states that Tens of Thousands of eighteen-year-olds will graduate this year and be handed meaningless diplomas. † This statement raises many questions for me and Sherry was not effective in convincing me of her views expressed. I feel like this statement was made to make her point seem more reasonable. I would like to know what percentage overall is that number.I do not feel like she took into consideration that many of these students may have learning and or developmental disabilities. How many of these students needed extra help and the schools in their district lacked the resources to appropriately help them? Were these tens of thousands of students really cheated or did the teachers and schools do the best they could to teach these students with the resources they had. Teachers are already overworked a nd underpaid and now Sherry is basically saying they are cheats.If the students were cheated that is saying that the teachers are cheaters. The definition of cheater is to defraud, swindle, deceive, influence by fraud, to elude and to deprive something expected. This to me is very harsh and shines a bad light on teachers who dedicate their lives to teaching. I found that her one experience with her son who was hreatened by a teacher to be flunked does not prove that flunking is a positive tool. Yes it worked for him, his mother was an English teacher. How many of the other tens of thousands that Sherry speaks of had this same advantage?I do agree with Sherrys viewpoint that teachers have to get students attention in order for them to concentrate. In that one circumstance, with her son, threatening to flunk him worked. In that case I see that her son was cheating himself, not the teacher or the educational system being the cheater. Sherry does admit that this one example, her son, do es not make the case. Once again I am left feeling like there is not enough evidence presented to get me to Jump on the bandwagon and agree that the teachers of these tens of thousands of students are† cheats†.Sherry goes on to speak about passing students who have not mastered work. â€Å"Passing students who nave not mastered the work cheats them and the employers who expect graduates to have basic skills. We excuse this dishonest behavior by saying kids can't learn if they come from terrible environments. † So now from Sherrys viewpoint the overworked, underpaid teachers are not only cheating these students, they are cheating mployers that hire them. This is very unreasonable. Sherrys views might be more acceptable to me if she held the student more accountable.A great teacher should not be labeled a â€Å"cheat† because they have limited resources or students with very low academic standards for themselves. Flunking as a regular policy may work in some cases but as a fix all for all students, I disagree. It worked in the case of her son and kudos to them. Many students don't have Published English teachers to help and guide them. Not all students have support of their parents and their opportunity to succeed or fail rests purely on their shoulders.
